Lalitha Sahasranamam is a text kept very sacred which comprises of 1000 names of Sri Lalitha Devi, the ne mother, These sacred hymns were written in Brahmanda Purana as Hayagreeva Agastya Samvaada  (discussion between Hayagreeva and Agastya). Hayagreeva, Lord of Knowledge, is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, with the head of a horse. Sage Agastya is one among Saptharishis.

Lalitha Saharanamam is said to have been composed by eight vaag devis (vaag devatas) upon the order of Lalitha Devi. These vaag devis are Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari, Koulini. The Sahasranama says that “One can worship Lalithambika or Lalitha Devi only if she wants us to do so”.  The temple at Thirumeyachur, near Kumbakonam, is said to be where Agastya was initiated into this Sahasranama. Another substitute version states Bramham Mutt at Kanchipuram is where this initiation happened.

This Sahasranamam is utilized in the worship of Durga, Kaali, Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati, Bhagavathi and almost all incarnations of the mother. A principal text of Shakti worshipers, it brands her various attributes, and these brands are structured in the form of a hymn. This Sahasranama can be used in various modes of the worship of the Divine Mother. Some of the ways of worship are Paarayana (Recitations), Archana, Homa, Sri Yantra pooja etc.
